Begun Bhaja
As I opened the fridge, I could see a half-cut egg-plant (Brinjal). Manu was going to prepare a sukhi-sabji with aalu and cabbage. This brinjal was getting older and it was time it should die. I could visulaize "Begun-Bhaja" in that brinjal and I told Manu and Narinder that I would make one of the bengali dishes and I was sure they would like it.
They did warn me against the amount of oil I was going to spent on an experiment whose result could be horrible. Will all the courage I have, i stormed into Narinder's Kitchen..(Mine was loaded with rice and dal). Made a mix of haldi, chilli powder..and salt and rubbed the beguns against that paste. Now the real game began...I put one begun on to the already heated oil...Oh God ...I think the begun had some water in it..and oil started to dance and spill...Save me my Lord !! One by one..as it turned brown and partly black...I had fried 7 beguns.....kuch toh jal gaye the :-(
Little did I know the amount of smoke my preparation generated....luckily it was just not good enuf to ring the smoke-alarm-bell. Narinder started yelling and opened the doors and windows..as he was the one who had to sleep there :-)
It was really very oily..but not that bad...eatable..It made be remember Barpeta Road (Assam) where "Begun Bhaja" is a common preparation.
BTW..the snap which I took of the "Begun Bhaja's" contains a newspaper in the background....and the only readable words are " Avoid Mistakes"......I have to appreciate GOD..and destiny.
